Bio

I am an analyst, researcher, writer and scholar. I am the author of the 2023 Being Chinese in Australia: Public Opinion in Chinese Communities survey report. At present I am a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Social Policy and Research Centre at the University of New South Wales and most recently, Research Fellow and Project Director of the Multiculturalism, Identity and Influence Project at the Lowy Institute. My career has spanned from academia to the policy world and beyond.

Coming from a scholarly and policy background but with a passion for art and culture, I bring to my work the best of both worlds: rigorous analysis and high attention to detail. My work is multidisciplinary: I am interested in the intersections of art, development studies, political science and sociology, and this is reflective of my education, work experience and skill set.

I have written and researched extensively about civil society, non-governmental organisations, development, policy, public health, migration and, art and museums. Problem-driven and policy-relevant, my research speaks to practitioners, academics and the general public. Being bilingual in Chinese and English has given me the opportunity to present my work and engage with a broader audience. While my expertise in China is widely recognised, my work is comparative and international in scope.

Skills

Research, writing & analysis

In-depth research, rigorous analysis and an engaging narrative are the foundations of impactful writing. I begin by asking the right questions and understand my audience to craft the perfect piece.

Cataloguing

Cataloguing is an indispensable part of managing a collector, gallery or museum’s main asset, the collection. I engage with the collection and in-depth research to appreciate its value, in order, to catalogue and give context to each object as it relates to the collection and to the broader material cultural history.

Teaching, instruction & presentation

As a researcher and writer, the ability to engage, share and learn from others is one of the most rewarding experiences. With ten years of teaching, instruction and presentation experience, I ensure the right message is directed at the right audience.
