In this article, I consider the British Museum’s recent re-opening of the China gallery and to assess the narratives presented about post-1911 China. What is regarded as “modern” and “contemporary” China, and how it is conveyed require attention and dialogue, particularly in an age when misinformation is routinely thrown about as facts.
